I had the same problems using a USB sound card.

It worked everywhere except in advmame

I fixed this on two different retropi images using this process:

      edit the advmame.rc

      delete these lines:

      device_alsa_device default
      device_alsa_mixer channel
      device_sound alsa

After that it magically started working :)

Thanks @caver01. I was working with all 3 AdvanceMAME options available in RetroPie.

Maybe I should install all copies of AdvanceMAME and delete the /opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame folder, and install AdvanceMAME 1.4 again and see if it continues to get over written after I've set some controls again.

There might be an old file system redirect hanging around.

@caver01 @mediamogul Thanks for the additional testing; surely that's the reason for the issue.
      Maybe @amadvance can fix this.

Libretro overlay implementation shows that it's possible to get high res overlays without affecting performance.

It would be really nice if libretro could support also backdrops.

@caver01 Totally agree. I was only joking about you "banging" on about it! It is a solid MAME for those "difficult to configure" games. I really appreciate the direction.

Apart from the fact that they then appear in both menus (which is what you are aiming for anyway), it should be fine. Also, don't forget if the rom requires a parent or bios set (like the Neo Geo stuff), you will need to symlink these files too.

@edmaul69 yep. It works a lot like AdvMAME. However, I noticed analog settings like sensitivity don't get the image name embedded, so these are universal for the system.

      @meleu :)

fbalpha is a maintained core (it has a number of programmers working on it) whereas mame2003 is basically mame exactly as it was in 2003, as far as emulation goes.

fbalpha is also used in the fighting game community (i think it's the core of that online thing that was/is quite popular), so i would guess that most of the popular fighting games are running pretty much perfectly.

so on that basis, i assume that fbalpha is the better one.. but that said, i use mame2003 for every 2d fighter it can do, and i've not noticed anything much, other than it not supporting certain rom hacks that fbalpha does. if i could wave a wand that would swap them all over for me i would probably do that, but it sounds a lot of hassle :)

@rridenour Once you get a better feel for the way each version of MAME relies upon a corresponding (and different) romset, you may reconsider using the Arcade folder. As you figured out, it isn't very useful when you drop an entire romset into the folder if you want to leverage multiple versions of MAME. You will inevitably run into conflicts. Where Arcade DOES make a difference is in "uniting" the interface for arcade games. In other words, non-technical users understand what an arcade game is, but may not understand the differences between AdvanceMAME, libretro cores, FBA, and so on, nor the technical reasons behind using one version of MAME for one game and another version of MAME for another. By combining ROMs under a single folder, you effectively strip the interface down to a single decision for the user: Arcade, and you manage the emulators that get used per ROM with RunCommand settings.

This idea, of course, requires a fair amount of "rom management" to keep everything straight. Instead of dropping the entire set into Arcade which would overwrite ROMs from another set that are already there, you have to mix and match individual ROMs and track which emulators you are using to launch them. This probably means you are storing the entire sets off-system and keeping track of what you use to launch each game in a spreadsheet. It seems like a lot of work, but for me, it's worth it for how it simplifies the interface. I am all for having options, but I love that I can present a clean, intuitive interface to users who don't understand (and don't want to understand) what is going on under the hood.

@dudleydes said in Arcade Vs Adv-Mame...:

rc file in a text editor, go to line 42 (or search for dir_rom) and make the changes outlined in my previous post. Repeat for the other

Just did it and is working now!!! Thank you very much!
Now if i could get also the mame2014 working it would be great.

@challenger2010 Apologies for bringing this back from the dead, I wondered if you'd managed to resolve this calibration of analog joysticks in advmame?

I am trying to configure some pots for a Warlords mame cab, and I have a nasty deadspot at 0,0 that I want to remove!

Finally got it... in the file advmame-0.94.0.rc there was a line near the end that was input_map[ui_configure] I deleted it and it works again. I first tried to add auto to the end of the line but then mame would not boot.

@BuZz Yes. I have not tested it personally, but users are reporting it working with composite video.

Note that the timings programming is enabled only after configuring AdvanceMAME with the advcfg utility to add the proper monitor clock information. At that point AdvanceMAME starts generating video mode at runtime, taking into account the monitor capabilities. More precisely, it's enabled if the "device_video_clock" option is present.

If no configuration step is done, AdvanceMAME uses the current video timings, and ask the Framebuffer to do the scaling, like in your changes.
Likely the only difference is that it takes into account of the aspect ratio.
