@paulmartin Try looking into the options described in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/672/a-stop-job-is-running-for-lsb-controlblockservice-init-script/18, either boot the Pi in 'safe mode' or mount the card from another Linux system and delete the powerblock driver start script to stop the reboot cycle.

Following-up, I think the controllers are configured correctly. They are just using the default hotkey setting. It's just a little wonky-ness with the device when pressing the Select and Start buttons at the same time. It seems to take several tries, but then it does work.

It's to bad that the original SNES30 / SFC30 have been discontinued.

Would love to see a Bluetooth version of the new SF30 2.4G / SN30 2.4G models or a new production run of the original models.

@billyh Try it first. I have two PS3 controllers (original) and RPi3 and it works good for me. Played for like 2 hours straight with my brother without any issues.

There is other issue with PS3 controller though - if I let it idle for a few minutes, the daemon (service) responsible for connecting with the controller hangs and I canßt get it back to working condition (I may be able through command line or SSH, haven't tried though). From what I read this issue gets resolved by using USB BT dongle...

Turn off your wifi and you will get Bt working fine with both controllers

I did a little edit. Seems to be an issue with the 8bitdo FC30 Arcade Stick in bluetooth mode - but not in USB mode.

@mediamogul Actually a really good idea. You can also buy "dead" OEM controllers, or third party controllers from eBay for the parts and mix and match until it is good. I did that with my Logitech PS2 controller. Except for the L3 button it works excellently now.

@kasimar1 Player selection is done with the Select button, not with D-Pad. It's not a mapping problem, just the wrong button.
