I use GameEx on my arcade PC. It works just like what you're looking for and has plenty of options for artwork. However with the video snaps, box art, titles, marquees, control panel, etc etc etc, they're all storage and memory hogs. I love it on my cab, I don't think i'd do it on my pi if it was available. That's just me though.

@DatsunPatrol I think it's doable, but actually it would be more a "total time running the emulator with this ROM". A suggestion I can give you (only in the sense of making your request more visible to emulationstation hackers) is: change your topic title to something like "[emulationstation feature request] Game Usage Tracking".

After reading both yours and Rookervik's explanation, I think I understand a bit more of the relationships between the various programs/scripts and that I should fiddle around more with RetroPie to see how everything works together. Seems like implementing a save state UI is more complex than I imagined, not that it wasn't already complicating enough. Just testing a moment ago, I realized that saving to the same slot with lr-picodrive and lr-genesis-plus-gx cores for the Sega Master System would overwrite the same file because they save to the same folder by default which also brings its own problems.

When I was thinking about an alternative way of exiting the controller setup, I was recalling how I would usually configure inputs in PC games and some emulators and the immediacy of being able to back out if desired which was why I suggested the button combo. However, having an exit based on a timer does sound simpler to understand than the button combo. This feels like both would need to be implemented and tested to see which could be better. I think the relevant file would be GuiDetectDevice.cpp so I'll look into that when I have the time.

I guess if it had to be a specific button combo, it would be any button plus the directional key Up and hope that people would associate that with going up a folder in a file explorer or going back up to the menu haha

@xleguill not supported in RetroPie. Recalbox has multi language emulation station if you need it.

      @leejsmith @Twitch0815

The AMD driver download at http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/embedded?os=Linux x86_64 will not work on Ubuntu 16.04

AMD's proprietary Catalyst driver (called fglrx) is not compatible with the Xorg shipped in Ubuntu 16.04 or later. AMD are no longer updating Catalyst for Linux so this proprietary driver is no longer an option.

The only option available is to use the open source driver (called radeon) which is already included.

There is a newer AMD driver framework upstream (called amdgpu) which has both open source and proprietary options, but it does not support the older HD8000-series in the Gizmo 2 (nor does it support the HD6870 I'm running in my desktop PC).

The free radeon driver used to be fairly terrible, but it's quite good these days. Current performance on the Gizmo 2 (and my PC) is as good as it's going to get on Ubuntu 16.04 onwards.

The only way I can see to maybe get better performance is use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and the proprietary embedded driver linked above, but I don't know if that's possible with the Gizmo 2, nor if RetroPie will still compile on older Ubuntu releases.

@Hevvie said in emulationstation systemd service:

I had the same issue, what you need to do is put "<bool name="BackgroundJoystickInput" value="true" />" into your es_settings.cfg file as it thinks ES is running in the background.

I will try this out when I get a chance. Great find!!!

The lack of free GPU memory caused it. So either keep your split higher as you have done, or use a lighter theme like Carbon.

If your gamelist.xml is being over written you can check to see if you have "save meta data on exit" enabled (press your start button and go to 'settings' If I recall coreectly). If you do not disable it, emulationstation will overwrite your manual XML entries. Turn it off before you jump to prompt or ssh in to edit your game list.xml. You will also need to restart in order for your manual entriesnto appear as well.

@meleu yeah. I call the retropie menu "settings" because the carbon had a gear logo on it and i named it settings in my theme.

@BuZz Thanks. It was worth a shot.

I didn't see anything on Attract-Mode's documentation about it there either. :(
