I shouldn't think you want to do that.

Please provide more information - see https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first (I don't know what version of RetroPie you are running, or even which hardware you are running it on etc).

Because they are not automatically configured like the libretro cores, and need manual configuration (Some may not even support joystick, others may need configuration). If you use the lr-prboom version of doom your joystick should work out of the box.

What if this exact same issue arises after making zero changes to a retropie that had been working for several months?

I was playing snes roms for an hour or so, plugged in my keyboard to test out Kodi, and all of the sudden an error began popping up "illegal instruction" when attempting to boot/reboot the Pi.

I've run the retropie update scripts, hoping that could solve the issue but it hasn't. Now the "illegal instruction" does not appear, however the Emulation Station splash screen flashes for half a second, and then its back to the initial boot up command line screen.

My filesystem is far from full, so I know that's not an issue.

I've also attempted to remove one console worth of ROMS to see if ES is overloaded in anyway, to no avail. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

I'll fix that up - something must have changed the logic in bash as it's fine on my ubuntu desktop and on raspbian. Maybe a specific version of bash has some different behaviour, but the variable should be initialised so I will do that.

It's not available for the rpi3. X86/X86_64 only.

ok, after 2 days, I finally solved the problem..by default steam stores, the file /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules

for some reason the retropie script also installs /ect/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules

the file in /ect contained the instructions for xbox and keyboard which was overridding the /lib rules.
I removed the ect file which should not be there and everything is now working. (I actually removed both files and reinstalled steam-devices)

I had the same problem,where the hell is Doom then I realized that it not installed,its to make the image smaller so it don't take long to download.

If its working fine in 3.4 and not working in newer versions of RetroPie then its a bug. Report it as a bug and see if anyone can fix it.

@kAnGeL88 Those emulators won't run on the current Pi hardware, so theyre not available on those builds.

@Slighty sounds like a corrupted SD if you have the funds to secure a pi 3 I'd recommend it. Very happy with mine compared to the pi2.
