Just in case anyone else comes across this I got it working. It wasn't easy and took some trial and error, there isn't very much documentation out there about the inner workings of the asound.conf file but I must have read it all.

The asound.conf file needs to look like this. Obviously if your usb sound card is a different number or you didn't disable the default sound output of the pi yours might be a little differnt bit this should mean you get no errors about mixers and both game sound and background music on ES play ok all through the left channel only.

      pcm.custom { type plug slave { pcm "dmix:1,0" } ttable { # Copy both input channels to output channel 0 (Left). 0.0 1 1.0 1 # Send nothing to output channel 1 (Right). 0.1 0 1.1 0 } } ctl.custom { type hw card S2 } pcm.!default pcm.custom ctl.!default ctl.custom

when i go to the network folder in windows bios is not in caps

That's the file share name, not the folder name as seen by the Pi.

@Lummox-JR So if you're not wanting the Bluetooth USB either, I'd recommend checking this out :

@mitu switching the controller to the switch mode, which I didn't realize would even pair, fixed the loading issue. Crazy!
It does introduce some input lag but still very usable.

      Thanks so much!

Using raspi-config to change the audio output will not write to /boot/config.txt, but will change the ALSA (sound system) settings.
Changing the settings from the raspi-config will invoke

      amixer cset numid=3 2

underneath. Try running this command from the command line (exit EmulationStation via the menu or by pressing F4) and see if the settings are kept after a reboot.
If that doesn't work, then add more info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

Looks like the performance is pretty poor, even without sound. What emulators are you running and what resolution are you using ?
Can you run with verbose logging enabled (switch it on in the Runcommand launch menu) and then post the log from /dev/shm/runcommand.log ?

FWIW, I ran into this issue as well after updating. Going into Raspi-Config and changing the audio from Auto to HDMI fixed the issue for me.

I had the same problem. The navigation sound work but with delay, i press bottom and the sound play 2 seconds later. The video screen saver is not heard. The volume control although it changes it stays at zero. But the sound in the games is good.
I have tried all the options of "Audio Card" "Audio Device", but the only one I hear something is heard with a lot of lag.
This happened to me after I had updated the Emulation Station. Before updating it worked fine.

Is there any way to fix it?

@swimdad84 it looks like it. You can also plug your phone into that dongle too to test it I suppose or just plug the pi into it.

@bucktaylor100 said in Help with configuration:

What's the best way to configure the controls for arcade games

Arcade games can have different button layouts, so the emulator tries its best to map a regular RetroPad to the emulated system. Usually the D-Pad is mapped to the joystick, Start is mapped to P1 Start, Select is Coin, A/B/X/Y/L/R are mapped to the panel buttons.
You can customize these per-core or per-game through the RetroArch configuration menus - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/.

What's the best mame type emulator

      Start here.

Is there a way to have a favorites section or a simple way to get to a specific game without scrolling for 10 minutes.

Yes, you can press Y to toggle the Favorite flag in a game and you can enable the Favorite global collection, which will show as a separate system in the Emulationstation list of system.

How do you shut this down easily? Can I configure a button to do a shut down?

Yes, you can configure a button.

How do I configure the audio? Amp is on and plugged into pi. Amp has volume turned way up and I plugged a phone into the amp and it played so I know it's all wired correctly.

Use the Audio menu in RetroPie and choose the analog jack output as default.

If this was a windows based system I could have this all configured in a few minutes but unfortunately it's just not that easy with Linux.

Sure, just install Windows on the Raspberry PI and you're good to go :).

The finally solution for me was manage the relationship 1:1, one speaker with one dongle (USB). For spread the sound on all speaker i used an virtual audio card with "paprefs". Maybe we'll see this skills on new Bluetooth versions.
