well I had my head wrapped around several problems with Reicast and controllers for the past few days. I had configured the controllers many, many times with joyconfig, editing emu.cfg, controller files for DC, etc, and I finally found the source of my problems.

The so called 'automatic configuration' is broken. No matter what you put into the config files, it gets overwritten when you run Reicast. The script tries to identify the devices configured in the OS and assign them automatically. In my case, always assigning them wrong, so anything seemed to work (keyboard or gamepad).

The only thing that worked was to comment out the line in the script (.sh) where it gets the result of the "automatic" detection and put it into the command line for Reicast call. I dont have my PI here to see exactly the script name and exact line, will try to update this post later with more details. But you get my point.

Just commenting this single line and voila, my pad started to work and I was able to get past the date/time screen, and play a game.

@dankcushions , thank you for your previous insight. That made me try to figure out how everything works, in regards to button mapping, in lr-fbalpha so I posted on their github with my issues (and tagged you there last week as well). We're still having problems with the default controller mappings not being proper in RetroPie according to barbudreadmon. Basically when the Device Type is set to modern, my 8 button Fightstick should be mapped like such for EVERY game:

      (3) (4) (5) (7)
      (1) (2) (6) (8)

Besides 6-button Street Fighter II style games I’m getting button mappings all over the place, and we're trying to figure out if it is something with how fbalpha is programmed for RetroPie or what. If you would like to read about the exact games I tried, and my results with the button mappings, they can be found at the link below (or if you want me to repost it here - please let me know and again, thank you for your lenghtly last post, it really did help greatly!).

      https://github.com/libretro/fbalpha/issues/156#issuecomment-340183189

On a side note, on mame2003, how would you suggest I change the mapping for the service/dipswitch menu? I just did a fresh install of RetroPie 4.3, so I need to test this again to make sure it wasn't my fault, but I think that was mapped to L2 or R2 and I keep hitting it by accident, and I don't see the option to change that when I hit Select+X and go into the controls.

@meleu I remember having myself a problem when trying to save the core config overrides for PS1 from the retroarch menu - and I've seen similar reports at https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/8527/psx-remaps-failing or https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/8527/psx-remaps-failing - that's why I thing that it might be a permission problem with saving the core specific options for the PS1 core.

@jfrmilner Thanks for the kind praise. My answer about multiplayer games is going to come from the arcade game options, as my build obviously has that emphasis. There is another thread here somewhere that lists all of the 4-player games (4-player MAME lists can also be found online). But I have far far less than a full ROMset loaded on my system--I load games as I learn about them. That said, it is hard to beat a good game of 4-player Gauntlet and Gauntlet 2. Try Xenophobe. Then, there are the fighter games like X-men, or the Simpsons and TMNT. Battletoads has 3 player capability, Rampage is fun. Then there is a handful of sports titles. Stone Ball is super fun! NBA Jam, and a few racing games like Super Sprint.

My build looks like a 4-player cabinet, but remember, many classic arcade games have the CRT oriented vertically, so for those, even though they are not 4-player games, I play them from the vertical sides of the cabinet (players 3 and 4) to get the best, full-screen experience.

@tropez I have ghost inputs from time to time. But mine are a little more tame, a random scroll to the right or left. If I power down and back on, that usually does the trick.

So I ended up doing the following:

I left the basic config in place.

I then tested each game, changing the controller type to analog once the game was started and if it worked, I created a custom config for that game that has the player 1 and player 2 controller set to analog.

So now each game works as it should, some work fine with the default settings and the d-pad only, others work with the analog stick. I couldn't find one blanket setting that worked for all games, I had to test each one and configure different options files for each game that supports the analog controller type. It took a good amount of time, but works like a charm now no matter what game my kid fires up on the unit.

No, I mean get in emulationstation get in a game (any game but you have to do this with every emulator)and enter the menu from there with your keyboard. Then you can go to the input settings (with your keyboard) and bind the keys to your controller.

@indvrkness Your post does not include all of the details from THIS POST which you are supposed to read and follow, and it doesn't look like you have read and followed the documentation that actually addresses using these controllers.
