Press start and choose Configure Input - try to map buttons once again You can change exit hotkey button but only for two buttons - one button for activate hotkey and second for exit lr-xxx is a libretro so it's all well connected through RetroArch so you can press hotkey set for RetroArch menu and configure your buttons. If you don't use libretro then you have to set it manually (probably by editing some text file) You can do it from pc via SSH but you have to know basics of linux bash. It would be easier to do just by RetroArch and trying to stick to libretro (lr-xxx) emulators. Just use RetroArch menu during libretro emulator working.

@jdrassa I just encountered a big flaw while using ${system.theme} in an <include> tag.
If it can't find the specific file, e.g. if someone uses an custom collection, it breaks the whole theme for that selection. All theme settings are suddenly ignored.

I had the idea to create some sort of external metadata library for systems that could be simply used by theme makers just by including a single file which further imports the metadata from ${system.theme}.xml files and also provides labels. It also imports a file which is used to theme those text elements.

I integrated that into my Flatline Theme here for testing purposes and noticed that behaviour.

To make the process clear again:

      theme.xml includes _assets/mds_include.xml mds_include.xml includes mds_data/${system.theme}.xml and mds_style.xml

It would be great if you could take a look at it and tell me if I made something wrong or if that is unavoidable for now. I mean I know that ES will fall back to the default theme if it can't find an include file. Maybe there's an way to ignore that error.

Edit: I just had another idea, would it be possible that ${system.theme} returns default if an unknown system is selected? Then we could use files like default.jpg or default.xml.

      @jdrassa
my hacky perl involved reading the rating and path of every game
it then creates launch scripts for any game with non-zero ratings under a new emulator "ichiban"
i'm pretty sure the xml is fully parsed

i'll dig a little deeper when i get a chance
but saving gamelists is a cpu-bound operation
      ie, the bottleneck is not:
reading the xml (which are only a few megs at most)
      querying the filesystem

@mat03111984 said in emulation in shops:

such a shame that there not a place where people can relive them for free

Weeelll, when you put it like that, I am reminded of an exception, should you happen to live in the United States. A certain website was granted exemption from the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is allowed to possess and even cache games to be played directly from a browser. You can also download games and even whole collections of games without worry of violating copy protection, so long as you don't redistribute the games, or make them available for public play afterward.

So, as it currently stands, if your business resides in the US and you offered up the ability to play the games via their web-based cache format, I don't believe any laws would be broken at all. This would effectively allow a makeshift internet arcade to exist where people could gather to relive these games for free, legally. What's more is that when Kodi v18 is released with their RetroPlayer media layer, an addon will also be available to stream and scrape these games from the website, allowing an almost unlimited game library to be searched, browsed and played as if they all existed on your system without the need to take up any significant local storage space.

All in all, it really is a great time to be a retro-gamer.

      ... 1) https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive 2) http://mardell.me/blog/how-to-load-roms-from-a-usb-drive-on-retropie/. Both links had about the same steps

no they don't. 1) says to not edit your es_system.cfg file, but 2) exclusively says that. they're entirely different approaches. we only recommend method 1).

doing some of hybrid of both methods will break everything. you need to reverse everything you've done and start again.

@Cooloring if on a pi 3, disable overscan on /boot/config.txt.

If on a pi 4, doesn't work with omxplayer because of different video handling. Use VLC for screensaver.

You may choose to use VLC for screensaver on the pi 3 as well, but performance isn't great.

Thank you for your answers. I've tried to use another emulator (mupen64plus-gles2n64) and it works fine ! It does not works with retroarch, so i will have to configure the controller, but i guess this is not really a problem. I'm sorry, i posted this too soon.

@Fourthlaw said in Quick question about installed emulators (I hope):

I'm installing all optional cores from source. If that doesn't work, I might just start over from a fresh image.

I shouldn't think you want to do that.

Please provide more information - see https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first (I don't know what version of RetroPie you are running, or even which hardware you are running it on etc).
