@drog1998 There might have been a misunderstanding about my suggestions, they were to either :

use a recent version of retroarch with the "Core provided" aspect ratio (aspect_ratio_index = 22) which is the default and recommended value if you are stuck with an older version of retroarch, use mame's TATE mode if it's available in mame2010 (instead of manually rotating through Setting > Video > Output > Video Rotation) if you are stuck with an older version of retroarch and TATE mode is not available, set the aspect ratio manually to 3:4 (alongside the manual rotation from Setting > Video > Output > Video Rotation)

If setting the aspect ratio manually to 640:480 (which is equal to 4:3) ends up with retroarch displaying it as 3:4, then you are using a recent version of retroarch (older retroarch wouldn't rotate it to 3:4 automatically, which is the bug i mentioned).
In that case, my recommendation is to let the core decide the correct aspect ratio by using "Core provided". The problem with enforcing an aspect ratio as you are doing is that some games are not meant to be played with a 4:3 (rotated to 3:4 or not) aspect ratio.

      @Limegreengamer9 I don't 'have' any other drivers.

You may try to see if the gamepad works with a more recent Linux kernel, with the drivers included there. Boot with a recent Raspberry Pi OS Lite and try to run jstest there to see if all inputs are properly detected. You may need to install the joystick package for the jstest command.

Please add more details about your setup, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. There's no need for adding also a German translation, this is an English forum.

The controller seems to be recognized, what inputs are not working ? From the screenshot, it looks like you started an arcade game - those kind of games will usually not register your inputs until you add a 'Coin' (which is usually set to the Select button in RetroPie/Libretro cores).

I recommend to read the RetroPie Doc's about arcade emulation: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/

Of course, we can't provide links about bios or roms files because is illegal and against of RetroPie community rules.

@draksus said in Boomer friendly way to exit games using a n64 controller?:

Is there a way to have the pause button function in game AND be the hotkey?

      Probably yes.

Its ok if a shortpress brings up ES menu, a medium press brings up RA menu.

That's not how it works. Once a game is started, ES is no longer active and you can't open its menu(s) anymore, you'll have to exit the emulator before ES becomes active again.

If you're only interested in N64 (or maybe just in a couple of systems), you can run RetroArch directly - without EmulationStation acting as a front-end. See Lakka for a similar gaming distro that has just RetroArch running.

Updated Doom the Way Pi Did IMGs Released 20250616

      Changes worth noting:
      Updated GZDoom to v4.14.2
(+The Latest version of myhouse to match)

That's about it, no other Updates or Kernel changes or anything.
Honestly I did not want to make any changes at all since this IMG has been Rock Solid for me on x3 Pi5's including 16GB model.
But the changelog for GZDoom v4.14.x was HUGE.

I hope retropie devs have not drop x86 support (4steamlink) just because they think there is either lows end pies or high end desktops and nothing between.

Steamlink is not created by RetroPie, but by Valve. If you wish to have x86 support for it, they're the only ones that can make it happen - but I don't think this will change at some point. There are other streaming solutions for x86 - like Moonlight.

@mitu Thank you. I went thru the link you mentioned. I think I can follow the instructions on how to set it up. The main problem I have is how to configure buttons that I have available. By default, the emulator looks to be set for keyboard so I need to reprogram all the buttons and the joystick as the keyboard is not connected to the system. I just don't know what options to set for each button so I can launch a game, play it and then come back to the emulator to select another game.

As to the screenshot, it is Batocera but I am just trying things. Have same problem with button setup in Retropie as well.

@Shadow666 Everything runs slowly and the sound is very choppy with recalbox? Surely it can't be throttling the cpu

What games are you running? Everything runs great bar N64 atm with the 9.2 release on the site. If you have a patreon account you can get the latest beta where n64 runs better. They even have killer instint arcade version at full speed with Mame 2003.

I tested fbneo and they seem to be running a very old core, they are missing a lot of features which are on the official build.

Recalbox support seems to be focused on French which is a pain as it is not a language I am good at.

@mitu said in (Pi5) emulationstation starts on settings / splash screen instead of Arcade:

The issue you're experiencing seems related to ControlBlock (driver/service, I'll see if I can reproduce it on my system. Not a Pi5, but maybe the behavior is similar ?

I use ControlBlock on my Pi3 with absolutely no problems, it’s been rock solid.
