There are tons of dev type boards but none have the community and software support of the Raspberry Pi. Lakka does a pretty good job of supporting different kinds of hardware

I don't have the BIOS? Where do I get it from?

Please read the forum rules. You cannot ask where to find ROMs and/or BIOS files. Also, you asked this same GBA question here yesterday. There's no need to have multiple posts for the same issue.

The Pi 1/0 utilize armv6 processors and the 2/3 use armv7. The images are optimized to accommodate the difference.

I wound up noticing that Retropie fails to give you plugins that have not been around for longer than 7 years

not true. for example, GLideN64 was first released in 2015. it's still in development now (and is actually by the same developer of glide64mk2, so could be considered glide64mk3 i suppose)

Aside from the fact that they're not supposed to sell a RetroPie image, their showcasing of RetroPie is the most troubling part; someone who doesn't know what's going on can look at that and assume that the RetroPie team is behind it all.

I've recently heard of a script that downloads roms from an exclusive web server once the Pi is booted and is connected to the internet, so they're technically not selling roms, but that still can't be legal.

Also, the sad part is there's not much that anyone can do about these sales; if you report them and they get shut down, they just come back under a different name. The only thing that I can suggest is to encourage people to build their own setups instead of buying them. People who aren't tech-savvy tend to be intimidated at the thought of putting one together, and they need to know that this is a platform for beginners to learn computing; it's not some impossible piece of tech that they can't wrap their heads around.

I'm an engineer too :) I couldn't resist the urge to build it myself, but of course it helps if you're familiar with woordworks.

If I should have changed one thing, I would have routed out some of the wood from the inside of the boards, e.g. in hexagon shapes to save weight but still keep some stiffness - this arcade weighs quite a bit :)

Wiring is not that complex with a RPi, mostly consisting of signal wires and ground wires from the iPac to the buttons. The illuminated ones need a few more but that's it. Keeping wires tidy helps the overview, but there's countless videos on YouTube - check them out.

My screen size is a 16" 5:4 and I think it's a pretty good size, and since many games run 4:3 there's only black borders in vertical arcade games. Just look at getting one that's as fast as possible (less input lag/response time), maybe a modern one with a gaming mode.

Not quite, but you may try installing the ES-Kids fork, which allows you to set it up in kiosk mode, with no access to the options and such.

I tend to leave them zipped for the older consoles but any cd based system I unzip them as they are usually slightly faster to be read by the emulator as they do not need decompressing

@thedeathstar said in Is RetroPie the new xbmc / kodi? Discuss.:

The only thing I have ever used a keyboard for was my wifi password. I also had to use a mouse to scroll down during the controller setup in Kodi, but that might have been the build I was using.

Those are the biggest things I had in mind, yeah. The wifi thing wouldn't be quite so bad if it at least managed to remember wifi networks, but what it's doing currently is that if you go connect to a wifi network somewhere else, but then bring your PI back home later, it won't remember your home network at all. Then what makes that even worse is that you need to get in with SSH sometimes to do a safe reboot, and can't do that if there's no wifi, so it's really not safe to run the thing without a network, and since setting up a network requires a keyboard, it's not safe to take it anywhere without a keyboard.

Edited the post with a link for a breadboard pi 0 build using a spi display.
Please tell me what you think.
Final price would go down a fourth, and final build would be smaller.
