@petrorie It is probably because the tech have some other disadvantages than scanlines only, making the image worse, which you may dislike. The emulation together with LCD displays have "perfect" image, clear from any pincushion etc and color corruption duo to ntsc standard and cables (consumer or rgb?). Plus the consumer tvs have worse scanlines than the good scanlines we used to emulate. On NES emulator, I use blargg's NTSC filter to add additional artifacts, even if I didn't have a NTSC console and grown up with superior PAL system (at least superior in image quality). I like it the bad way. ;-)

Btw, funny enough I posted several hours ago something related to your statement. I show there, why I use shaders on my crt monitor. Thats right, I got crt monitor and still use crt shader on it. :D Its just because I can't run them in native resolution, sadly. Here if you want see the comparison (jumps right to my posting): https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/4046/crt-pi-shader-users-reduce-scaling-artifacts-with-these-configs-in-lr-mame2003-lr-fbalpha-lr-nestopia-and-more-to-come/280

@andrewh said in RetroPie on the 3B+:

Now that RetroPie 4.4 is out, I’m thinking of upgrading my bartop.

I have a Pi 3B+ to hand, and since it looks like I’ll need to pretty much do-over from scratch, I’m thinking to swap it in to replace the current 3B.

Can anyone who’s got it working comment on relative performance & temperature? i.e. is it worth it?

I appreciate that my WiFi is quicker for transferring and scraping. I appreciate that my DS4 controller pairs when it didn't before. Other than that, I hvan't noticed too much difference between the 3B and 3B+ outside of those things and maybe a little more stability in emulationstation.

As far as temperatures go, it's cooler. I have a fan powered on mine though, so I'm not one who checks temps or anything. Sorry.

I manage a RetroPie image for my brother and cousin as well, so the transfer speeds made it worth it for me. If you aren't tweaking it much at this point, I would say it isn't worth it.

@classicgmr Thank you for your post, I did read somewhere that all 3B+ Pi's can fit in all 3B cases. I think I got to take this in mind when purchasing a 3B+ with a case.

@thelostsoul Yup DKC2 was the best one, I really love the pirate theme. The game is still epic, especially that cart level in the 4th world of DKC2. Thank God for savestates lol. I literally sweat from my ass when I play that level. DKC2 also had the best music out of the 3 DKC titles. These are one of the best music I've ever heard in a game:

    A half related question :

While SD cards are awesome for size/weight/etc., how much of a speed advantage would using an external hdd be? I can't imagine an ssd adding any value over a simple 2.0/3.0 mechanical drive being that the transfer rate is bottlenecked by the shared usb 2.0 bus which apparently is divided up by the all ports and the sd card reader. Is a top of the line sd card just as good as an external hard drive or are there any advantages?

@beldar So I thought there were regional differences between dual shock 4 v2's (Japan having the better dpad). There aren't. It was just a fluke. That dpad wasn't supposed to be in that V2 at all. I've found out that a lot (maybe all) of V1 dual shock 4's have that superior dpad. Apparently Sony thought they improved the dpad design in the V2 by making it more matte and grippy. But for me the older dpad plays miles better so I bought some broken V1 controllers to harvest those dpads. :)

@matchaman I will say this about 3D titles though: I found that while playing Final Fantasy VII, the first few moments can be a bit jarring, but once I'm running around and gaining XP, I'm no longer bothered by the blocky polygons and low-res textures.

Even if the polygons don't bring tears to my eyes, the Aeris story line will every time.

@eldrethor said in Avenues to acquire legal copies of old roms?:

They can make some very disagreeable business choices, but I've seldom ever had a problem with their first-party products.

Even the VirtualBoy (arguably their worst product ever) was very well made. It was just ill-conceived.

    @loggahead

That used to be one of my go-to rentals when I was a kid when I couldn't decide on anything else. The Atari 5200 'Cloak & Dagger' game they play in the movie was actually the arcade version running on original hardware just off screen. An actual 5200 game was planned and well into development, but like hundreds of other titles, it was shelved due to the video game crash of 1983. Still, we can now play the original through MAME and it runs very well in RetroPie.

Bumping this, might help clarify matters for several other GPGX users!

ekeeke replied to me about this, explaining the following regarding the new MAME sound engines:

*ASIC version corresponds to the chip model used in later Model 1 consoles and most Model 2 consoles. It features the better (not distorded and less noisy) DAC output and full address decoding of status register (which causes slower music in Hellfire since it was developed for the discrete chip version) compared to discrete chip version.

Enhanced version has same "enhanced" features as ASIC version + full resolution DAC (14-bit instead of 9-bit in real hardware versions) + zero busy flag time (busy flag in FM status is only emulated for real hardware chip versions). It corresponds to an "idealized" version of the chip, like it is emulated in other Genesis emulators.

The low pass filter is unrelated to the chip DAC and exists in all console models (it is implemented by analog circuitry outside of the chip). It should be enabled for accurate emulation of analog sound output (and disabled if you prefer the clear sound of pure digital emulation). Filtering ratio is configurable because it varies for each console models (also between model 1 consoles or between model 2 ones) so it's up to you to find a value that matches your own memory of accurate sound. Default value should correspond to Model 1 VA4 console.*

Anyways to each their own, we all have our pieces to play in developing the project

Yes and my piece, what I want to do, is to bring EmulationStation to today's standards regarding ergonomic and design, while keeping a "retro touch".

I love the RetroPie community, but I'm afraid we have conflicting goals. I know that you aren't against this kind of changes, as long as I provide support for it, but I may not always be here to do it.

Beside the grid view, I also wanted to bring Localization to ES, but got quickly demotivated because Buzz said he fear this will add too much, unwanted, extra work in future developments. I and many others liked the idea, but I don't want to force you (RetroPie core team) to have it if you don't want it.

Depending on the age and ability of the kid, it might even be a good idea building it together, or at least letting the kid help his parent. You know, all that bonding and valuing one's own hand's labour thing. :)

@jonnykesh Well, first you have to wait until your tomatoes are ripe. Then you wave a magnet over them and write down the the readings. OR you can plug in a headphone jack and listen for some AC/DC. If that doesn't work put voltmeter in the same puncture and see if you pick up any AC/DC or maybe Metallica. After that you throw everything in the trash. If you want to be environmentally aware you have to stop for a moment and notice the harm this will have as you throw it all in the trash. You have then scrapped the metaldata of your Romas. You can eat the tomatoes at that point.

@caver01 I never thought about what "no holds barred" literally meant until reading it just now. "No holes barred" has to exist as some porno title.

    ...
Being new I always read it in my head as scrape like you were scraping the top layer of information from various sources.

I will admit that until recently I was pronouncing in my head libretro as some Spanish word I didn't under stand Libret-ro and not lib-retro (as in library retro)

@redbatman It depends on the reason why it gets bad reviews. Probably the emulation is not good. There are some SNK ports which have bad reputation.
