@dankcushions I don't think I've done any config changes related to the functionality of the hotkey combo.
If you start a game using Mame 2003 and press F4 (show gfx) then you get the screen I showed in my first post. I tested it just now and the hotkey combination to exit doesn't work.

@mitu said in Speeding up retropie boot up on a Pi zero and turning off BT & WiFi..:

@MachLid One thing you can do to speed up the boot is to disable file shares (Samba services). From what I've noticed, this is one of the services that takes up a lot of time (proportional to the total boot time) to start up.
I've looked up in the RetroPie-Setup script and you only have the options to remove Samba completely (not disable it), so you'd have to use the command line to disable the services manually.

sudo systemctl disable smbd sudo systemctl disable nmbd

More ideas and help!! thank you very much, and I'm also going to try this as well.
I have no problem killing anything unnecessary on it in order to speed up booting into the game selection menu.
What I'm hoping to do with this Pi Zero is simply and only use it for mostly Atari 2600 stuff and maybe some popular arcade games from pre 1990's or earlier (if it'll handle it).
I grew up with a Atari 2600 and lots of this stuff thru out the 1980s,, and thought it'd be neat to have something very little and compact (and even battery powered) and be able to quickly power on, and play some of the true classics. Not sure what I'm doing yet for a compact and portable housing or anything like that yet,, I just wanted to square away the working parts first.

    Thanks again.

@RedNifre It depends on how it's compiled on Ubuntu. On Retropie, it uses SDL2 for the UI (as Emulationstation), on Ubuntu I assume it uses GTK3.
If you want to dig more and submit a bug report to the Vice project, you can try enabling only the SDL2 UI when compiling Vice and see if you can reproduce the problem also on Ubuntu.

@Retribution But don't forget that an online backup isn't full under your control and access. It may be that just when you need it, your internet connection doesn't work or the site isn't available.

Also, if you happen to have illegal ROMs, I'd think twice before uploading them to a third-party's server.

The uninstall should only removes packages and dependencies if you want it to.

Do you want to remove all the system packages that RetroPie depends on?

WARNING: this will remove packages like SDL even if they were installed before you installed RetroPie - it will also remove any package configurations - such as those in /etc/samba for Samba.

If unsure choose No (selected by default).

Did you choose yes to this?

@jwat147 Welcome to this forum and to the Retropie community.

There's a section in the Docs about NES including where to put which kind of ROMs. Please read it and ask any remaining questions here.

Just FYI Guys, If you reset the game via the controllers hotkey, It will play the PSX bios intro. So if you really want it, you load the game and reset it as soon as it loads. With out the fear of certain roms not working.

@sirhenrythe5th Carbon supports video. As far as I know, the only grid enabled themes are @ruckage's Pandora and Neogeo mini themes, which are not in the RP list of installable themes (specifically because they only support the grid view).

it is my understanding that lr_stalla doesn't support paddles, so I don't know how well it handles paddle games with more than 2 players.

try to install the stand-alone stella

You can also get the 2600-dapter D9 and use real Atari paddles

@quicksilver I was asking for the memory on the pi itself. Your answer was applicable. :)

I have modified the values in RetroPie and in Raspbian. Thank you. It's fixed. I just hope this doesn't have a significant impact on other activities on the Pi sucj as simple web browsing.

@shavecat force turbo overrides the CPU governor and applies your overclock all the time, even when your pi is idle. There is very little purpose in forcing turbo, it will shorten your Pi's life, create extra heat and use more power.

You are better off changing the CPU governor to performance mode instead. My recommendation is leave force turbo alone. For now, I would also recommend leaving overclocking alone as well. It causes all sorts of issues of you don't know what you're doing. It's really for advanced users who know how to do proper stability testing. Based on some of your previous questions, you aren't yet proficient enough with your pi to delve into overclocking. I am saying this not to insult you but warn you that you might need to do some additional research/reading.

@quicksilver It might be... However it's connected to an hdmi monitor. As I mentioned, the hiss is slightly more audible when I use, CRT for an example, when the metadata is scrolling. It was less audible when I switched to the Pixel theme.

I was actually wrong it started up again but when i connected a power supply to my hdmi av connector it stopped and has been good since i think it is a power issue and using overscan must draw less power so thats why it seemed better
