'Revolution X' with Aerosmith is another one. On top of having a wonderfully absurd premise, it's also a great rail shooter.

@stevepax Hello and belated welcome to this forum. I'm close to finishing my own arcade cabinet myself and I plan to do something similar to you but with two bluetooth controllers for players 3 + 4. I didn't dive into the matter deeply yet, however, but I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my current knowledge.

If the emulator and the game rom support four players, you should be able to configure the controls for players 3+4 just like those for players 1+2. Mind that some games come in different versions (roms). TMNT has 2 and 4 players versions, for example. Its 2 players versions have "2p" in their rom names. At least Retroarch should recognize your controllers upon reconnection. A common advice is to connect them every time to the same usb ports in the same order. There's also a script by @meleu called joystick-selection that simplifies the mapping of controllers to players, and if the controllers should be recognized by their names or by the ports they're plugged into. Alas, I don't know.

You're rightly terrified to lose your configuration if you didn't backup it recently. Do so now, because bad things happen all the time to "valuable" data, e.g. storage failure. (I put "valuable" in quotes because there is a saying that data with no backups isn't important by definition; if it were, it would have backups.)

@dankcushions said in Design dilemma for retro arcade machine:

plus of course, if you play any console games the 'insert coin' button is by default also the 'select' button, which is used in SNES, PSX, etc.

No plans to play any console games. I was always a C64/Amiga fan, but I emulate these on my PC 'cause it's a more suitable environment than a arcade machine. The one game I wouldn't mind from a console would be Alex the Kid from the Master System (I believe).

      Thanks for your input

      @fen84

has anyone been able to get Mario Kart Arcade GP (or 2) MAME working?

'Mario Kart Arcade GP' runs on the Triforce arcade system which is based on GameCube hardware. Unfortunately the Raspberry Pi isn't nearly powerful enough to emulate a system that demanding.

As for the rest of your issues, You can't just "pop" any old ROM in the arcade folder. You need to get a specific numbered ROM set for the arcade emulator you've chosen. For example, the default arcade emulator in RetroPie is lr-mame2003, which uses the MAME 0.78 ROM set. Anything outside of the intended ROM set for your chosen emulator will usually result in failure. Also, as a rule of thumb, any game north of 1995 has an increasingly higher chance of running poorly on the Pi.

Everything you need to know for arcade emulation in RetroPie is covered here.

@roll_sk Great work! One thing I'd have done differently is the position of the speakers. I would've put the speakers to the other two sides of the cab, so that the players could hear stereo sound. However, if stereo isn't a priority, there's nothing wrong with the speakers facing the players.

I just bought an iPad battery for this setup, I’ll publish the latest build video soon... a little more editing to do to make it flow better... most things on my channel are Dubious:) ... health and safety takes a back seat (stupidity prevails)...

@stevepax Hi, I have the same setup as you so I am hoping I can help.

There are two keys that I know of in MAME that could be doing what you suggest, "F10" which toggles throttle on and off, and "insert" which throttles when it is held down. As mitu suggests try pressing tab to get into MAME menu and check the Input (General) and see what the throttle key is assigned to.

Setting up the controls for Street Fighter 2 and other similar six buttons games took a little trial on error (as least it did for me!). If it helps I have my buttons set up like this:

      Player one

Top row from left to right
      LP - lctrl (P1 button 2)
      MP - lalt (P1 button 3)
      HP - space (P1 button 5)

Bottom row from left to right

      LK - lshift (P1 button 1)
      MK - z (P1 button 4)
      HK - x (P1 button 6)

I set the keys up from within MAME using Input (this game).

      Hope that helps

@jblock22 On the bright side, you do have what sounds like a Pi3, which is a supported computer, you have a cabinet someone built with arcade controls, USB ports, a display, and a nice enough design that you were interested in buying it. A build project with just this hardware alone is a serious undertaking, and getting one that looks nice enough to sell is no small feat. Depending on how it was built, you might also have a controls interface of some kind.

Now, the software is the real questionable part of all of this, but you can easily re image the SD card with a known working image from this website and join the community. You will need to open up your system and do some investigating into what exactly you have which might entail some google searching as well, but once you know what you have and you are willing to work with it, you can probably turn this in to a great system. It will take work and interest, but it can be a fun hobby.

Maybe that is not why you bought it, but there could be a silver lining.

Sounds like you've got everything set up fine in EmulationStation, but not in retroArch.

Make sure you're using "lr-" versions of an emulator, then try going into the retroArch menu (Select+X). You should be able to configure your buttons in there.
