      Hi again,
Sorry about that, after entering amixer -i the output is amixer: Mixer default error: No such file or directory and entering amixer -l just gave the above error when I thought you said amixer -1,

And would you have any idea about how I would even read the boot/config.txt file

      Thanks

@tmar89 The very 1st thing I would do is try a different PSU. Just to rule it out. 2A should be enough for a Pi2 but if you have something with 2.5A I would go with that. Also, use a hard wired PSU rather than a plug and USB cable combo. Some cables just aren't up to it.

I don't know about a bootable drive, but this guide might be close to what you want:

      ... 1) https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive 2) http://mardell.me/blog/how-to-load-roms-from-a-usb-drive-on-retropie/. Both links had about the same steps

no they don't. 1) says to not edit your es_system.cfg file, but 2) exclusively says that. they're entirely different approaches. we only recommend method 1).

doing some of hybrid of both methods will break everything. you need to reverse everything you've done and start again.

      Hello,

      Pi Model: Raspberry Pi 3
      RetroPie Version Used: 4.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
      USB Devices connected: PS3 controller + DataTraveler G4 64GB

As I said, right now everything works fine. My roms are on my SD Card.

When I insert my USB with roms in it. It seems to corrupt my retropie... I'm stuck at a terminal command and it shows kernel version, cpu temperature, but no way to get back to usual retropie interface..

      Thanks,
      JP

Wow, I posted this question 3 years ago, and never responded to anybody's suggestions... my bad! The solution to my problem was embarrassingly stupid and simple. Retropie had copied all the roms over from my usb drive, and this filled up my micro sd card to a point where there just wasn't any room left to save game data. THAT is why I kept seeing "task failed: saving state".

Hopefully this is helpful to someone.

For your luck, you solved it simply by switching from DInput to XInput mode. However, there may be cases where this workaround can't be used. This link may have a fully working solution: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=36564&sid=cc03fff216d25ee04264771b9e3bd0bc&start=25

In summary, some USB adapters / controllers, such as this one, have issues on various Linux distros. A problem on HID Input drivers prevents D-Pad to work properly. Down and Right works, but no Up and Left.

To solve this problem, you'll need to recompile Linux kernel on your RPI after making a few changes on "hid-input.c" file, which is located in "/drivers/hid/hid-input.c" (Within the source code directory). You can find all instructions on link above.

Alternatively, you can try a few compiled kernels made by the same guys who found this solution. But you'll need to make sure the kernel was compiled exactly for your linux version, or else, you may have problems (I got no sound problem two years ago, when I tried those kernels).

This kernel bug is here since 2010, and it affects Linux on desktop too (got it on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04, per example). Until now, it wasn't fixed by developers. So, the only way to get it working is by compiling kernel from scratch.

@rbaker said in Is 2.4A enough?:

@HenrikoMagnifico I have a brick similar to what you describe but I have 4 usb ports on it. It is rated at 4.5A. This means that inside my cabinet, I can power the pi comfortably with joypads, keyboard and an ipac decoder. I also have another for charging things like phones and kindles at the same time. As long as your current draw across all devices doesn't exceed the rating of the charging device, you will be fine. No need to worry about how the current is shared. Your devices will only draw a maximum as described on their case. E.g. This keyboard I'm on is 70mA, so only 0.07A out of the 4.5A available. Look on the back of devices, usually printed on. A charger can never output more than a device needs so don't worry.

Thanks for the help, I will purchase the USB charger I talked about earlier :)

Final Decision.. I'm going to return this and see if I can find a POWERED USB2.0. I just tried one last thing:

dwc_otg.speed=1 added to the /boot/cmdline.txt file

This tells the Pi to run at the lowest possible bus speed. That means all the USB ports on the Pi are 1.1, the SD card slot/LAN/Wireless are all 12mpbs, and the whole system as a whole runs like it was built in the 90's. This worked, believe it or not. But the speed was too slow for my dongle to properly work. So that tells me, the keyboard is definitely 1.1 (it worked great with that low-speed) and the Xbox dongle requires at least 2.0. The green light came on to show it had power, and the Pi DID detect it, but data transmission was too slow for it to be useful.

Somebody, PLEASE!!! What is a good USB hub that works? I basically know now that I need it to be USB2.0, and it has to be powered as the Pi can't send enough power through the hub.

Then my best guess is that it just isn't compatible.

You could try it on an Ubuntu Live CD on your PC to see if it's a problem with Linux in general or the Raspberry Pi/Kernel. (You can use jstest-gtk to test it).
