Turns out I am wrong. Issue still persists.

I tried using a separate micro SD card with the same v4.4 retropie build and got the same results.

I tried disabling WiFi and bluetooth. This dropped the temps from 75+ C down to an acceptable 50-60C.

Regardless the unhandled exception, freezing, and segmentation faults still continued.

I surmise the pi zero w I bought new is defective.

@Chameleon said in Retropie Freezing / Errors:

I know this is an old thread but I want to keep related information in the same location.

I encountered the above unhandled alignment bus error.

    I then found this post:

"Bus error on Raspberry Pi 2 armv7 command line app #22384"

    https://github.com/dart-lang/sdk/issues/22384

I then went to rasp-config via emulation station UI and changed the localisation setting to my locale.

Example: AMERICA > pick a city

So far I do not see this alignment exception pop up. It would pop up fairly fast prior simple idling on the emulation station menu.

    Hope that helps.

    @Tackskull
The gamelist.xml needs to have the assignments for each and every piece of media. If its a new .xml it won't have any direction to the scraped graphics.

I'm sure there must be a way for it to work, in emulationstation there is an option for local media, I don't know what that means but I always thought it was something like that. In skyscraper there are options for local media, but I don't know if it would work like that without the cached database for everything.

It’s literally a 15 minute fix and the standalone for retropie works just as good as the lr version providing you bind your center gamepad button to be able to access the emulator menu.

Is there anyone else who has ScummVm set up? What do you have in your <game>.svm?

    For updated info purposes.
When you search in google "how to disable retroarch menu hotkey", this thread is the first thing that comes up.

    As for 19 Jun 2019

All of the above didn't work for me.

But this is the solution now:
    sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

    search for menu_driver

The default value should be "rgui". Change that to "null" Null, with two L.

    Save and restart emulationstation.

@tezter Most of that information is useless now since I figured it out yesterday, but thanks for recommending Techgara.

@anmag70 I'm not the one that started the topic, but can you link one the videos you mentioned ? Otherwise your guidance reads like 'use Google to find the answer'.

@polygaryd both paths work fine, Emulationstation reafs both. The 1st path is preferred since it doesn't need root access.

@mitu So when I got home I took the microSD card that was in the raspberry pi zero W that I think is faulty. And just moved it over to the new raspberry pie zero w that arrived in the mail today. And it seems to be working a lot better. It booted up just fine to EmulationStation and I’m not getting any of the button issues that I was having when I had it in the Retroflag GPi case. It occasionally gave input configuration crashes too.

I tested only one Atari game on it and it seems to be working (where as before I could never keep it from crashing long enough to run a game). However I’ve only started transferring games over and havent tested any others. Either way it’s not freezing like it was just a few seconds after loading up emulation station. And it has yet to crash. Which means so far that’s a really good sign.

When I’m done transferring the files over, doing a scrape for the game images, and can actually spend some time playing games on it. I’ll be glad and certain of what the issue was. But based on all the trouble I was having and I’m using the exact same microSD card with everything that was installed before. So far I’m convined that I had a faulty raspberry pi zero W.

@mitu and @barbudreadmon That does work, thank you. It now loads the game. I changed the name to mrdo.tap and it works. Changing the extension to .sna did not work.

I can't get any inputs to work at present, but I suspect that will be because I'm on Retroarch 1.7.5 rather than a more recent one, so will need to update Retroarch if I can.

I'll also add that it's against the forum rules to ask where to get roms or discuss romsites. That includes retropie images that include ROMs.

YAY! got it working thanks to https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/18409/guide-getting-emulationstation-to-work-with-fs-uae

Had to install fs-uae manually first because of the gpg error then try to install with retropie-setup then follow the step above

    All you guys rock :)

Huh, changing that shouldn't have mattered, especially given that the game was originally NTSC!

You might want to look at the script I wrote here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/22392/lr-atari800-5200-artifacting-basic-and-other-guidance/17 if you want to get hardcore on Atari800 emulation.

Also might want my fixed build of the emulator, if you ever want to play anything that requires typing. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/22460/fixed-ctrl-and-shift-on-lr-atari800

    @leitmotiv
If I understood it more I would tell you.
If it were just a discrepancy of a name for the driver of xbox controllers, but it seems to have other uses and I don't know if it even is a xbox controller driver.

When enabled it creates an assigned number of virtual controllers, gamepads can be mapped through these and there is a technical guide to advanced controller mapping on the website here regarding these two things.

It is not part of the core install, I think the xpad driver works for xbox controllers.

Though I still don't know for sure if this is only of significance to player two or if at all. The way I think it applies to some of the controller problems is that player two will instead be a virtual controller and the controller that you'd like to be player two will instead be player 5 or something. But these things... there are a few layers and I know maybe 1/5 of them, you'll have to try uninstalling it at least and with luck control assignments will be naturally working for you.
