Change your Emulation Station theme to Carbon, and/or cut way back on your collections.

Had the same issue, took me a day to figure out

@mitu How would it pull the atari systems but nothing else?

What happens when you rename your atari (2600 I guess?) folder on the thumbdrive to something else, e.g. atari2600.test? Does it still show up or does another system appear instead?

Does the option "Parse Gamelists Only" in Emulation Station's Main Menu > Other Options change anything? (The latter only applies if you generated gamelist.xml files for your roms.)

And please excuse me, but are you really sure that the other systems are on the thumbdrive? Can you show us a listing of the roms folder on the thumbdrive?

edit: And please post the information that @mitu requested in the post above your last post.

@mitu Sorry for the long delay, I had no computer or Pi with me for the last days.
I returned home and did another update right now and was successful :-/
Dunno, maybe something was fixed with the last one.

    Thank you for your help.

I used the automatic way of doing it by just making the retropie-mount folder in the root of the drive and plugging it in to the pi and just let it do its thing.

    Thanks.

@Jareth247 Glad you got it working; I don't think the power switch script had anything to do with it - although the incorrect file that was causing the problem for apt could have been produced by an improper shutdown in the middle of an install operation.

@dankcushions So... your answer is essentially "Yes, it IS going to be a hideous and massive chore, and yes it IS the only way"?

This is the solution of the problem:

    Step 1

    Launch any game

If the game starts automatically then everything is OK, otherwise one of these 2 conditions may occur:

    1. Black screen

    2.
2a. Atari logo and "Copyright 19 Atari" text
2b. Crash screen: "!!! The Atari computer has crashed !!!" and a series of options

If condition 1 occurs, you must do this:
    a. Press F5 if you have the keyboard inserted, or X button on the joypad
The system will perform a "warm reset" and at this point you will arrive at condition 2.

    Step 2

If you have the keyboard connected: press ALT + C, If you only have the joypad (not recommended, because many games require the keyboard), click A with the joypad on "Menu" and in the next menu click A with the joypad on "Cartridge Managment" Select "Cartridge: none" and press the enter key (or A with the joypad) (there may already be the name of the rom instead of "none", but it does not matter)
Now you should see the directory (atari800) with all the roms, and the rom you have chosen in the emulation station menu already selected Press the enter key (or A with the jpypad) on that same rom
    *
A new menu will open: "Select Cartridge Type" Select "Standard XX KB Cartridge" (where XX may vary with 8, 16, 32 or 64 depending on the selected rom) and press the enter key (or A with the joypad) Then you will return to the menu: "Cartridge Management", press ESC and again ESC (or X and again X with the joypad)

    The game will be launched!

    * it may happen that the menu: "Select Cartridge Type" does not appear. No fear, just press ESC and again ESC (or X and again X with the jpypad) to launch the game.

Saving the config in the RGUI

That's not how it should be done - you should (have) use(d) the Core Remapping option in the RGUI - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#core-input-remapping.

I guess I must have completely missed that option somehow. That's worked perfectly - thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction :)

There is also the Free Heroes 2 engine (Fheroes2) that you can compile on Raspbian and make it work. I have succesfully tested it both in Raspbian desktop(X11) and in Emulationstation. It runs best in Raspbian desktop(X11) since running it in Emulationstation is too slow in speed.

I might as well create an install script like i did with Hexen 2 Hammer of Thyrion source port.

By using the Free Heroes 2 engine you will not be needing dosbox as this will run Heroes 2 natively through the source port.

Let me know if i can be of any help to you.

@connormalc Raspbian is just a linux distro with specific Raspberry Pi bits, for x86 hardware I'd install another distro which might be better supported on the PC. PIXEL is the name of the former desktop environment for Raspbian, I don't see how that would help you, maybe you meant NOOBS ?
I'd advise using bootcamp to try out Ubuntu - get the LTS 18.04 version - and install RetroPie on Ubuntu as explained in the Docs.
RetroPie does not run on Windows and while Emulationstation and most of the emulators run also on Windows, it would take some time to manually configure them to work together.

@TMNTturtlguy I realize this is a pretty old topic, but it is exactly what I was looking for and it came up on Google. I am just wondering if I can power 2 LED Joysticks this way with the same power supply? or would I need 1 for each?

@Kalamabrew My guess is that you don't have proper/accelerated OpenGL support in your installation. Scanlines (a.k.a. Shaders) don't work unless you're using the gl video driver, the fact that you're not seeing them seems to indicate your video driver is not gl.
Can you run a Libretro emulator with verbose logging enabled - using the Runcommand launch menu, then get the log RetroArch log file (/dev/shm/runcommand.log) and put it on pastebin.com to take a look ? Do the same for the RetroArch configuration file (/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg).

@GDkitty said in EmulationStation asks to map buttons that my gamepad doesn't have:

I am on the current ES (4.4 i think?), and it does not show the message to hold to skip, though it does work.

It does - but just at the beginning, before you start pressing and mapping your input. It's been fixed in the mean time, but it's not yet part of the stable update cycle.

@abnorm999 Looks like a button mapping problem, the hotkey is either always active or you've unset it and then start acts as an exit key, though I don't think this would happen with a recent RetroPie version.
Re-map your button, skip the Hotkey mapping using a long press on A, then - when asked - choose to use Select as Hotkey. If that doesn't work, then please add more info as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first and add the joypad .cfg file from /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads.

How are you connecting the devices - do you have an USB hub (and which type) ? Can you check the system log with dmesg to see if any errors appear there when the controller becomes unresponsive ? What power source (and no, a phone charger is not a proper power source) are you using ?
