My guess is that the best way to do this is to install Linux (e.g. Ubuntu 16.04) to a USB drive and make it bootable.
Then boot into Linux from that USB stick, and install Retropie following the instructions on the RetroPie website for x86/64 Ubuntu.

When you want to enter the world of RetroPie, simply boot the USB stick from the computer UEFI/BIOS boot menu.

I imagine that you'll want to use a fairly large USB stick to hold all the ROMs you wish to use.
64GB or even 128GB would almost certainly get you the bulk of the decent emulators.

I played this on that eltech desktop thing when they had me do a demo trial last year, it actually worked great under that thing. Probably the only thing I tested that did run well.

@herb_fargus Sselph's scraper supports video scraping from screenscraper.fr. I've recently submitted a patch that transcodes videos to a more Raspberry Pi friendly format. This needs HandBrakeCLI and is not advisable to run on the Pi unless you like it melting through the floor. I got into the habit of running sselph's scraper on my own linux machine (mac should work too I guess) and then copying the resulting files to my Pi after it's done.

@pjft Yeah, i will have to do some thinking on this one. I am glad it was something so simple and not something I missed while testing out all of the configurations! If you put the rom name into the gamelist the mail folder won't have any images/videos/metadata, so that won't work well either. The other thing I am going to look into is how to hide folders from the list. I have looked around threads and haven't come up with a solution. I am thinking of trying to see if there is a way to add the folders i don't want to see, like the bios folders, to the gamelist, and then tell the gamelist not to display that game/folder. Kind of like how you can # in the .txt files to turn things on and off. Any thoughts on that?

I was asking if this ever got resolved, I then stated what I did on 2 different occasions that resulted in NO WIFI on PiZeroW which falls in line with this thread, I don't see what I did wrong in asking if this got fixed.... But I will post a new thread, thanks

@meleu Yes your explanation about config save on exit makes sense.

I will not be doing it again.

If I navigate to this section on the UI it will only change the hotkeys for the system I am in at that moment
      eg: Mega Drive?

All the other systems will still be set to the defaults?

Is there a way to change all the systems at once from putty like a master retroarch.cfg file?

      Inside: /opt/retropie/configs/SYSTEM_NAME/retroarch.cfg.
If I go into each of the systems I use can I change the hotkeys for each system in this file?

This seems the most similar to my issue I've found. What is that editor you are using for the .cfg file? Also, this wouldn't happen to be with DragonRise controllers would it?

If you had read it, you would in the first instance post the information requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first so that help can be offered. You will also notice that in this instructional thread it states "please create a new topic and add the following relevant information so that we can help narrow down the cause of your issue." You have not done this so help cannot be offered.

If you are thinking "why not?" at this stage then consider your request "I tried configuring it, but it won't even detect at all HELP!!!". It's a very strange question. What version of retropie? What Emulator? What did you "try" to do? What do you want help with? Your configs? Where are they?

Finally, you say you read it? In the instructional thread, it clearly states "Make sure your topic title summarises the issue - do not use topic titles like "HELP ME". A better title would be "USB Controller will not control Kodi after update" - if that is what you are actually having an issue with - it's not at all clear. What is Kodi's update? Can you use the controller in emulationstation? What version of Kodi are you referring to? etc. etc. etc.

This is so that others may search for your problem. So, did you read it? No. By now, help could have been offered but nobody knows what you did or what you tried. Hopefully, my explantion of how best to get fast help will assist you in future posts.

Ok, solution found. I don't know why the two settings are different... but anyway.

I was able to stop all game sounds for nes by editing the file:
      /opt/retropie/configs/nes/retroarch.cfg

      audio_enabled = "false"

This works and doesn't stop the roms from working like using the select-X method. Now working on atari (stella)

@Ted-Ryot or you could just set "color buffer to rdram" to "async" and the intro will work properly (on a pi 4). If you use RetroPie use mupen64plus-gliden64 and the game will run fullspeed too.

I test this during last month and in my opinion, the best is :
Nes lr-fceumm or lr-quicknes (lr-nestopia is too heavy)
Snes lr-snes9x2005 or 2002 for compatibility (2010 too heavy, and the standalone pisnes and snes9x-rpi is egual to 2002), forgot fx games ... (Staaarrrrfoooxxxx)
      Gb, gbc lr-gambatte
      gba lr-mgba
      sms, genesis/megadrive, CD lr-picodrive
      tg16, CD lr-pce-fast

for arcade game (in bonus) imame4all (standalone) and pifba (for cps games, and neogeo)
NO RETROARCH CORE FOR ARCADE, all are with abusive lagging with pi0w
neogeo pocket and color : no solution, mednafen is lagging in pi zero w
      psx : i don't know, if someone knows ...
      n64: i doubt it ...
      dreamcast: XD
output in 640*480, global in 1080p (not 720p picodrive still laging oO) , no overclocking with 0,5 A , pi-crt shaders, overlays gb, gbc, gba in 480p and with all of it, it work like a charm ...
