      @E3L1 , try this:
      In terminal type:
      sudo nano /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
      Then Change
      defaults.pcm.card to 1
      To
      defaults.pcm.card to 0
      Save, exit, and reboot.

I finally got these controllers working after completely wiping my SD card and rewriting the Retropie image. The only difference this time is that when running through the update I didn't update the underlying kernel, only the Retropie packages. The only reason I did this was on the previous setup this caused several issues such as having to log in at power-on. These were easy to fix but I didn't feel like dealing with it.

@WishItWas1984 I can completely respect the desire for ultimate nostalgia. I personally love the nostalgia but I have made some concessions for some modernization. At the end of the day as long as you can make it serve your purpose and you're go happy, game on!

i ended up working around this by using a different version of mame (lr 2000 instead of lr 2010). So this might mean it was a MAME config, like i messed with the inputs in the MAME menu? I know i tried to go through those folders and nuke the default.cfg files, but perhaps there was another spot, or its just something else. Also magically i got the XMB menu after a reboot, so its a lot easier to see which user an input setting belongs to, phew!

@mitu It works just fine within EmulationStation, but once I start RetroArch everything freezes until I connect the USB controller.

@hallda12 What I think it might happen is that the triggers are actually registered as analog axes instead of just button presses. The xpad driver has a parameter for this (triggers_to_buttons) which is always on in the RetroPie installations and disables this behavior. It doesn't seem that xpadneo has a similar parameter - or it behaves differently.
You can try and running jstest /dev/input/js0 from the command line and see how the trigger appear - button presses or axis movement.

@mitu But isnt the shortcut meant to be Hotkey + X, not just select/start on its own. I'm almost certain my map is correct. Its almost like Retroarch thinks my Xbox controller is something different.

Can you add more info about your system, as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first ? What type of controller are you using ? You might want to switch to Emulationstation as frontend and configure it, since this will also generate a gamepad auto-configuration for RetroArch.

@dankcushions said in RetroArch Mirror Mode:

is an ES issue? presumably once you've loaded the game, it's now a game issue. there doesn't seem much point in fixing it in ES if there's no a solution for the games as well. never mind if you load the command prompt/retropie-setup menu...

With HDMI, you can flip the screen horizontally (and I think vertically), to give an image of everything that will look the right-way around when viewed in a mirror.

With component/SCART output suitable for a CRT TV, you can use a RetroArch shader to get the image flipped and rotated so it works perfectly in a mirror too (see this forum post). This is good, but obviously, all the menus, the screensaver (easier to fix) and general RetroPie/ES menus are the wrong way around. It would be very nice to find a fix for that last piece of the puzzle.

@tr3v0r If you're just a beginner, then I suggest you use RGUI and the auto-configuration produced for RetroArch and don't edit any files.
Use the 'Core input remapping' (see docs) to change the RetroPad controls.

It depends if you enable the option ROM folder for gamelists & images in Selph's Scraper. I do have enabled it, so my gamelists are located in the rom folders, not in /home/pi/.emulationstation/gamelists. See https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Scraper/#where-are-my-scraped-media-and-metadata-saved about the possible locations.

Feels to me like the image you linked probably included some, or i have no fucking idea why you would download it instead of the official image.
