@jgeibel still does not work. log file says that there is no emulator attached to the folder. With that language is still makes me think that it it looking for a single emulator binary to pay attention to for each folder

Well i can F4 out of it, and outside of RetroPie it works fine, same with the controller, but if i try to configure any kind of device as a controller in RetroPie it has that problem.

I got a USB Hat on the pi and thats how i connect USB and ethernet to it. it got power LEDs for each of the inputs and nothing seems out of the ordinary with it when entering into EmulationStation, so i doubt that the Hat is the cause of the issue.

Try searching the web for "wall mounted arcade cabinet schematics". There seem to be some to find, although alas, some inside walled gardens like Pinterest.

Nope.

You have to download the RPi4 version of Retropie .. that's why it's a separate link in the downloads section from the RPi3.

Well poop. The adapter DOESN'T support 5ghz. I guess it has been longer than I thought since my last update. Time to buy another Pi!

@Shenmue-is-life what do you mean the 'appdata' folder? isn't that a windows thing? retropie runs on linux - the save folder is typically the rom folder. please fill out https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

Making a retro console yourself is fun! Since you're going to customize this anyway you can do things right the first time instead of reverse engineering the thing. Get exactly what you want instead of trying to find someone selling something close to what you want.

Another option:
Logitech F310. (Wired, no rumble, Playstation style layout) $20 USD.
It may be wired but since it doesn't use 2.4GHz or Bluetooth, it just works well and is simple. Has a nice center button that is perfect for Hotkey use so you don't have to use the Select button.

Have you set the Country from raspi-config before configuring Wi-Fi ? If hubpiwi requires an additional Wi-Fi driver, then maybe you need to install it before configuring the Wi-Fi.

Thanks for your help. Between the documentation and the example, I have the button matrix somewhat working I think.

for NES my CRT likes
-240p screen format
-640x480 render resolution for the screen format
-717x552 (5 x -40 offset) retroarch scaling resolution
-bilinear filtering set to off

For SNES I use a 702x496 retroarch custom scaling resolution with a 12 x -8 offset and bilinear filtering on. Genesis looks pretty good with bilinear filtering on and standard 4:3 resolution

Try and turn up your mouse sensitivity ingame... also run "/cg_drawfps 1" in the console and make sure that you are running a solid 60fps. If the game is not running a solid 60fps this could be where your lag is coming from.
