I'm pretty shure Triggerhappy is running, because if it was not running it wouldn't have worked for the shut down hotkey.
I found the "name" of the buttons by using the "thd --dump /dev/input/event*" command in the post you recommendet and created a .cfg:

BTN_BASE3 1 /usr/bin/amixer sset PCM,0 2dB-
BTN_BASE4 1 /usr/bin/amixer sset PCM,0 2dB+

The buttons are connected via USB to the Raspberry and work great with the commands configured in emulationstation. The Speakers are plugged in to the 3,5mm klinke output of the pi.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem.
I hope someone has a solution.

Yeah, @Tundra your description is pretty vague. We get that you are trying to do something with 4.2.10 after you updated your pi (what exactly do you mean by that?) It reads like you had a problem with mystery file that you won't tell us about, but it is related to some emulator that you are unwilling to share, and also, we have no idea how you installed RetroPie or what hardware you are using.

@xsportseeker well i guess i read that all for nothing!! :) yeah im glad i read your second post because i was about to point you to that file. Glad you got it working. If you are interested in making .sh files to have all dos games show up in the gamelist or any other configuring help in dosbox feel free to ask.

@foreverclumsy I'm also trying to get my iBuffalo controller working with advmame - did you ever get a working .rc file?

well this pi zero will play some PS1 games with out bios
they have lag as the zero isn't strong enuf for PS1 and n64 games

Or is there a possibility to host a Game on a Windows computer or Mac and others can join? So i could just record my windows/mac screen to record the gamplay...?
I tried to host a hgame with Project64 and the AQZ-Netplay Plugin but my retropi said: "implementations differs", when i tried to join the game with my retropie :/

Battlezone was the first videogame that truly blew my mind. Proper 3D in a 2D era. I was about 6 or 7 y.o. when I first saw it, and had to take train trips to another city to actually play it (even though I could barely reach that periscope/visor). Also remember "steering" myself using imaginary twin-joysticks when walking to school. Heady days :)

@andershp if you have two matching controllers, just set up player 1's controller in emulationstation, then restart emulationstation and you will be good to go.

I've only recently updated my system to the new moonlight-embedded package yet I am having the same error, different controller ID but the same error. I've followed the steps you outlined and cleared the controller configuration but still no dice. Each time I launch moonlight, it finds the controller, yet never loads the correct configuration. Only falls back to the default configuration at the top, which isn't correct. Any help?

You will need to look at supporting sw for gpio inputs, try 'gpioneer'

@maplestory Correct. It doesn't matter. Those lines relate to the extra folders - nvram, etc.
