Follow the instructions on Retropie.org.uk to download and install the official image to an SD card.

Once you have an official image installed, try it again and see whether it now works.

the keyboard will always be set as player one from what ive read. and it should work simultanously with the gamepad.

@rascas I unplugged everything the night before, didn't help. I had reset the TV in the morning, but it did't seem to solve it either. However by the time I got home it was working again!

Updated the OP to indicate this problem is solved, and the solution.

as far as i can tell, this behavior can be different depending on the BIOS. load up a neogeo rom for instance, and you will see a retroarch quickmenu >> options entry you can change to a few different button combinations (Holding Start being the default). then take 1942 for example in where holding start does nothing, and you must activate the service mode from retroarch quickmenu > options then restart the core.

also, there is a line in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-core-options.cfg

fba-diagnostic-input = "Hold Start"

that might be what you're after.
i'm not 100% certain on all this but i hope it helps point you in the right direction.

retroarch-joypads is actually a symlink pointing to /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfig/ and my guess is that windows just doesn't know how to follow it properly.

@bjwest When you add a path to a library within Kodi you can select the Use Local Data only option and enable the checkbox to Look for Movies in their own folder. Thats pretty much it for setting Kodi up.
If you use tinyMediaManager to scrape all your Movies/Series beforehand, you can/must also use it to batch rename the files (which can also put them into separate folders).
That means, if you have a lot of files it might take a while to get all the data.

I used this guide for the overclocking and this was the correct method and worked for me:

Take a close look of that console image, where the lines are positioned in the boot config, that is the key thing that has to be correct.

After that, you need to try out different settings in the emulation, by opening the Quick Menu while game is running and changing the emulation options.

@saikyo78 you shouldn't have to, i didnt downgrade my controller after playing on the Switch, and im currently using it on Retropie. (Maybe 8bitdo has updated their manual / faq?)

Rewrote the image, and everything was nice and fresh. I can register each controller through the menu prompt but they won't connect or be recognized at all now

@treedude well that sucks. It would be nice to be able to rule that out. But the xbox driver might be an issue too...

It's hard to say if you have the proper power supply. Maybe check your power cable. I use an extra long one and keep that in mind when I am troubleshooting. Maybe your Pi or new power supply is malfunctioning. Do you have a second Pi to test your current card?

Since it's global it sounds like you might need to do some additional troubleshooting. I would almost reinstall with a fresh image on the SD card (or a different one) to rule out the SD card, image & configuration. Maybe a different USB drive if that's what you're using.

It seems there's a lot that could happening to make a determination or if it was a larger/build related issue more would be posting.

I am having this same problem. Making it impossible to play some games. Did you ever find a resolution?

@wchl What power supply are you using? What is the current rating of it? How good is the micro usb?
Micro USB cable may have very thin conductors / be too long which can cause a substantial voltage drop when RasPi's CPU needs extra current.

Are you using HDMI to display the screen? Try using

config_hdmi_boost=5

in the configuration file. You may experiment with different values of config_hdmi_boost. The default is 2 for Pi1 model A/B, and 5 for newer Pi's (B+, Pi2, Pi3). At your own risk, you can go up to 11.
Note that various adapters, such as HDMI-to-DVI, can also cause power loss and therefore require high values of config_hdmi_boost even with short cables.

i did a clean install of 16.04 and then ran the below commands. I also set the pi user to sudo with no password per the install instructions. At first i didnt think it worked because there are no icons for retroarch or emulation station, but i just ran emulation station from the command line and it worked. then i set it to start on login, much better that way. i copied some roms over and tried a few and everything seems to work. Thanks for the help BuZz!!!
