So, the power source is really such an important point that in no case should not be neglected? And let's say if I want to use an external HD that does not have its own power, then it is desirable to buy a USB hub with its own power supply? Yes it is, because it's supported by every system. But if you got it fixed up, good. But if not, you should try it out with other USB stick instead, so don't yet format your main drive, if it's not going to work in the end.

I've found a solution:

Install attract frontend, then i can configure my two joypads manually for the frontend.

For the backend(retroarch) i had the next line with value "linuxraw" so i changed it to udev and autoconfig worked!

input_joypad_driver = "udev"

The buttons were previously mapped so only configuring retroarch/all/retroarch.cfg was enough, now the two joypads work.

(1) Is your Pie on the same network as your computer?

(2) What username and password are you using for WinSCP? It should be username: pi password: raspberry

(3) The Host name on WinSCP should be the IP address of your Pie... (You can find that by using the ShowIP function located in the RetropieConfiguration area...

(4) You can also use a Windows 'file explorer' window to talk to the RP by typing in // IP address (making sure it is recognizing it as a network instruction, and not a website)

(5) Install RetroPieManager (one of my favorite) by following the video below. It lets you access via your webrowser, by putting in the IP address followed by :8000 . It's pretty slick, and let's you know if the files you uploaded are compatible in those folders. Only issue with it is it doesn't quite work well will large files (500mb+)

necrobumping my own post because I found a workaround.
I use runcommand-onstart.sh script (docs : https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Runcommand , my script : https://pastebin.com/XunR2bBY) combined with some delay (hard programmed in my fanControl program) to relaunch fanControl after Mupen has done its shenanigans and thus reclaim the GPIO.

In Vice i used "reset settings to defaults" and now Tape-Images are loading!
But i am afraid to say the "save settings" option is not really reliable/stable (i can "save" changes of my settings - but at the next start the changes are gone... Have to check that now....

It was the config_save_on_exit = "true" thing that messed it up.
I must have changed that a while back ago when I tried to get hi-scores to be saved.
Got it back to "false" now and the overlays work as intended!

I made the problem known on the official github but the person can't reproduce the problem, and told me to try one already built from libretro. In trying it out, i get the error relocation error: /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-snes9x/snes9x_libretro.so: symbol _ZNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEE10_M_replaceEjjPKcj, version GLIBCXX_3.4.21 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference

Might this be a reference to not having the latest gcc?

Don't worry, we all have to start somewhere.

First of all, when you load the game, it says to configure press a button. If you press a button here, it will take you to the options to change which emulator it uses.

I think Mupen64-Glide is normally the default. lr-mupen64plus is not the same as Mupen64, it is the RetroArch port of mupen64 and uses a different video driver.

If you want to add extra emulators to the system, the easiest was to do it is from the RetroPie-Setup in the retropie menu. This is also where you can update the emulators to the latest supported version.
